Chapter 01
The grade and the drainage decide what can be built
Everything built outside sits on top of a drainage decision, whether or not anyone made it deliberately. Extend a patio across the line water was using and you have not gained a patio, you have moved a puddle into somewhere it did more harm.
So the first look is at where water goes now and where it will go afterwards. On Blackland clay that is not a formality. The ground moves, and anything set on it that ignored the movement tells you so within a couple of seasons.

Customers describe this work in one breath: a pergola built, a patio extended, masonry on the front porch and the flower beds, tree trimming, and the regular lawn maintenance carrying on around all of it.
That is the sequence that makes it possible. The heavy work goes in while the turf around it is already someone's responsibility, so the lawn is repaired as part of the job rather than left as a scar for you to sort out afterwards.
Chapter 03
Handing it back to the turf and the beds
The last part of a build is the part most trades leave out: what the edge looks like where new work meets old lawn, and whether the beds around it are going to establish or sulk.
Cleanup, fresh mulch and a bed that has been reset are what makes the built thing look like it was always there. It is also why the same crew doing the grounds work is worth something on a build. They are the ones who have to live with the edge.
